I chose to create this piece because I love the concept of sharing.  Sharing is one of the first lessons learned as a child.  I believe that as people get older and more ambitious we often forget that so many people are connected to your dream.  We forget that no one successfully attains a dream alone.  So I envisioned blocks.  I call them building blocks.  These blocks represent education, funding, housing, opportunities nutrition, love, encouragement etc.  Each person in the community holds at least one block.  It is when we open the lines of communication and put in the work that the lines begin to multiply.  The blocks are like seeds that regenerate plant after plant until you have non stop growth.  I wanted to show how proud of these blocks the people are.  the little girl is excited about her block as if it is a treasure.  The older woman is elated about her boxes which probably contain wisdom.  The high school aged young man takes one from the older lady and passes it to the bicyclers.  The bicyclers load their basket up and prepare to pass it to the lady in purple.  They pass the blocks not witholding anything and do so joyously without a hint of jealousy.  The purple lady stabilizes the man at the ends tower and glows with celebration at what they have accomplished at the end of the cycle.  Collectively these people are empowered because the last man didn't build the tower along but with the contributions of the community.
2016 First Place Winner for Choice Neighborhood University Mural Competition......"The Box Builders"...50'x80'.....A mural about sharing in the community.  Ashley D. garnered the support of students from Booker T. Washington High School, Tri- Cities High School and the Ashview Community to help complete the mural.
